Case Study: Life Safety Manager™
The Challenge
The effective management of life safety devices is extremely critical in establishing a sound environment of care. As vital as these devices are, they are often managed ineffectively in many healthcare institutions.
Serving northeast Wisconsin and recognized for its innovative and practical approach to facilities management, Affinity Health System sought a solution to more effectively manage the periodic inspection of its life safety devices at the St. Elizabeth Hospital campus in Appleton, Wisconsin.
In addition, the facility administrators of this 600,000 sq. ft. campus stressed that the solution had to be cost-effective in both the short and long term while allowing the organization to proactively deal with compliance issues well into the future.
The Solution

Affinity Health System decided to implement Life Safety Manager™ (LSM) by Advanced Technologies Group, Inc. (ATG), to address its objectives.
LSM is an enterprise software product designed to schedule, track, and document the inspection and maintenance activities on all types of life safety equipment. The system utilizes software and Pocket PCs to electronically gather information. LSM allows the user to define all tasks associated with the inspection of a life safety device, as well as, the corresponding device location.
The results of the inspection and testing of the devices were then synchronized with the desktop component of LSM. Upon completion of an on-site survey of the campus buildings, the LSM database was linked to the corresponding CAD files of the life safety layouts. This provides authorized users with intuitive access to the information from the web utilizing ATG’s Enterprise Active Visual System™ technology.

The Results
All of Affinity's immediate and long-term objectives were met by implementing the LSM. St. Elizabeth's maintenance staff now can use the LSM to document subsequent inspection and testing of their life safety devices.
Authorized personnel now have full access to the location and inspection reports of these devices from the web without requiring any knowledge of CAD or proprietary database software. Affinity Health System has already started to experience increased efficiency in its resource allocation as the direct result of the implementation of ATG's LSM.
“The LSM has exceeded our expectations. By using this device, we have dramatically reduced the time necessary to perform the testing and maintenance of our life safety devices while having easy access to what we know to be accurate.”
