Case Study: Life Safety Manager™
The Challenge
Locating Life Safety devices and then inspecting them at regular intervals as prescribed by the various code compliance authorities poses a serious challenge to most facilities managers. Inspecting the more than 3,000 fire and smoke dampers scattered throughout its main facility alone, Northwestern Memorial Hospital (NMH) in Chicago, Illinois, was no exception.
A facility of NMH’s renowned reputation, size, and complexity was in need of a complete solution that would not only include a survey to locate and identify the Life Safety devices but also one that would provide them with smart tools with which to manage and inspect them, easily, effortlessly and intuitively.
Northwestern Memorial Hospital approached Advanced Technologies Group, Inc. (ATG) to devise a solution for its Life Safety management challenges.
The Solution
ATG implemented its Life Safety Manager™ (LSM) technology to address the objectives of NMH. All dampers on the campus were initially located and barcoded. The Pocket PC component of the LSM was then used to document the inspection and testing results of Life Safety devices in the NMH campus buildings. The web interface of the solution then allowed the automatic synchronization between the Pocket PC and the Life Safety CAD file that are hosted by ATG.

The Results
ATG’s Life Safety Manager has been so effective at Northwestern Memorial Hospital that the organization is expanding the solution to cover the rest of the campus buildings. The system’s web-based front end allows authorized users to instantly access the location and maintenance history of the devices from within their as-built layouts from any computer with internet access. At the same time, LSM is allowing the organization to generate a wide range of queries and reports based on such criteria as device type, location and test results.
